Your DMS works in the car, so the hard drive (the DMS is essentially a laptop HD) is fine.
Your cradle for whatever reason is almost certainly busted. Its the only thing that logically makes sense. If you bought your Phatbox from the dealer, and you bought it within a year, you could get them to replace it under warranty. The pin connector inside the cradle may have a lot of dust or small particles disrupting the connection. Since the cradle has no "cover" when there is no DMS inserted, it is possible thats causing a bad connection.

When you double click My Computer, do you see two drives named: PHTSYS and PHDATA. If so, can you browse their contents?
When you initially plug the cartridge into the cradle, so you see the green light go on and hear the drive spin up?
Do all your other USB devices work ok?

The damn thing is recognized on plug in, but then there is a hardware problem pop up and the drive is not accessible. Works fine on my other PC. It's a USB issue.
