Default Anyone here uses Mobil1 5w-50

I think I'm gonna switch to this since it meets the VW 505 standard. Anyone use this oil before? How is it in the winter?

Default I have just done an oil change with the 5W-50 and the engine is definitely more lively...

My Audi dealer used Caltex engine oil in the last service and it was crap.

Not sure about winter application tho (it is summer here in Aust). =)

Default Not sold in USA, other than for AMG service. Try Syntec if you want a 5w-50, runs clean....but thick

This is after 122k of 10k intervals in my friend's A4, Syntec 5w-50.
50 weight is quite thick by any standard, way thicker than anything under 350hp needs. It'll cost mpg and power. btw- VW 505 is a diesel standard.

Default A few Austrailians on the oil forum, you guys love it thick. Mobil 1 is expensive there too.

I'd think the Mobil 1 5w-50 would be less than "lively", but I suppose compared to what was previously used???? I'd say be a lil open minded about lighter viscs, you might like it. Probally hard to even find 40 weights, but that would be ideal up to your max temps there.

Default We have got Mobil1 0w-40 here... it is a fairly new product but it cost an arm and a leg...

Interesting, over the years, I have tried 5W-50 synthetic oils from Caltex, Shell, Mobile and BP and Mobile is the thinnest one among them.

Default The 5w-50 is do-able, Syntec might be cheaper. Look for BP Visco 9000, aka BMW/Castrol Edge 0w-40.

Roll out the 25w-70!!!
