Ok does anyone know what this could be:

While driving home from VT tonight, cruising on the highway, I had a strange burning smell come out of the vents about 5 different times. Each time the smell lasted for about 10 seconds and then went away.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't from another car around me since it happened a few different places (and once when i was alone).

I have a 2003 1.8t avant with 4000miles on it. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

did you have econ on and heat coming out of the vent rather than cold air?

first time no, but all the times after that yes

ive noticed a few times that there has been a faint smell of burning rubber wires or something with the econ on in hot mode...but im not sure...

It used to happen to me around 1000-5000 miles. Then it just quit happening.
