ESP uses EDL/ASR while functioning, but EDL/ASR operate independently of ESP. You can have a car that has traction control (EDL/ASR) but not ESP, but you cannot have a car that has ESP and not traction control. EDL IS a part of the ESP program, but ESP isn't necessarily active when EDL is active. EDL senses wheel speed differences, whereas ESP senses wheel speed, throttle position, the car's lateral acceleration, and steering wheel angle (yaw). The two systems, though, work similarly and it can be difficult to tell which is working when the yellow light flashes. The line is further blurred in the A4 because the ESP switch turns of ESP, ASR, and EDL. ESP, however, does not do anything in straight line acceleration. It only corrects for stability issues.
