As you can se it looks basically like black except for in bright sunlight, where it looks a dark gray (a LOT darker than Dolphin though). In sunlight the pearl effect gives a sort of blue-ish, green-ish sparkle deep inside the paint. When clean in the light the color has phenomenal depth to it, although it's so dark it hardly ever gets to show that side. This is the perfect color for someone who loves black but wants something with a little extra to it. It is a tiny bit easier to care for than black as well, a light amount of dust blends with the pearl effect.
For me the color has been always a little to dark for me, although after a polish and wax I've been pretty amazed at how nice it looks. I still think I'm going to trade to Dolphin next.
As far as I understand it, a metallic color has small flakes of metal, maybe aluminum or something, in it. They generally reflect back a single hue. Pearl flakes are more translucent and reflect back muticolored hues due to light refraction. Similar to how an Opel stone changes hue. Now the odd thing is that I think for Audi the difference is purely a marketing term. All my European brochures call Dolphin Gray METALLIC, not pearl effect. I doubt Audi has developed a different paint with the same name just for the US market, So I think AoA is just BS-ing about what is "pearl" and what is "metallic"

I presume these wheels are the Sport Package wheels from the 2000 A4. At least they look like the wheels on my car which is about to be traded in on a 2002 A4 1.8T Quatro (Note: It's been in port since last Saturday but it can't seem to get placed on a truck to Albuquerque - grrr).
