...I went with the Falken Azenzis ST115 235/40/18 on an 18x8 rim. The ST115's must be the quietest summer performance tire I have every used.
Dry traction is still quite good. Haven't tried in the wet yet. In summary just a good overall tire for the price.

I had a new set of 17 inch ST-115s siped at installation. Big mistake. Because of the low noise overall with this tire, the sipping caused a low speed range resonant "singing" noise on smooth newer surfaced pavements. I did not want to endure that noise, so I exchanged them for a set of Yokohama Db S2 replacements.

I think that the new grooves (normally added by the tire installer) channels water better.

completely disregard the R&D that went into it in the first place.
Just thinking out loud.

with a sharp blade cutting about 1/4" deep or less. These sipes, allow the tread rubber to shift a small amount from drive force reaction against the pavement (Or, SNOW.) This shift, rotates the block of tread between the sipe cuts, due to this angular shift, the sharp edge of the sipe blocks are exposed providing for thousands of additional edges to grip the snow. In addition, the siping increases the compliance of the tread conforming to the roughness of the pavement, further reducing tire noise overall.
The mounted and inflated tire is placed in a cnc special siping machine that cuts the sipes in the tread.
Snow tires like the Bridgestone Blizzak, have tread siping as a main tread design feature.
