Anyone Using Mobil 1 notice increased engine noise?
Had the dealer use my own Mobil 1 0W40 when performing the 10k service a few weeks back. Car was much quieter and smoother at first. . . .now seems louder than before. . . .is it me?

it's the 0w grade, plus synthetic oil is basically thinner than mineral oil...
When I switched from 0w30 to 5w30 (Mobil 1), my valve chatter at start-up went away.

Probably more drain from hydraulic lash adjusters
I am assuming that there are hydraulic lash adjusters in both engines. If so when the engine is not running a small amount of oil will drain out of the adjusters. Thinner oil would drain more. It takes a bit of time (10-30 sec) at start up to pump oil back to them.

5w-40 synth's the way to go.I can only think of 2 brands, but I'm sick of lecturing.Worth seaching 4

One brand is designed for extended drain intervals and has an EP, extreme pressure formulation additive package that is good for protecting diesel valvetrains and ideal for a chipped 1.8t engine. Only $3 a quart @ Wal*Mart.
Surprise it's: Shell Rotella T 5w-40! Valvoline Synpower is the only other 5w-40 I can find.

I don't see the API starburst symbol. Which of these '02 A4 oil specs DOES this Rotela oil meet?

Quattro Pete is right
valve chatter from our 1.8Ts are commonplace, though - just is. 0-40 is a 0 viscosity oil. That being said, 0-40 is pretty awesome since it'll have the same lubrication abilities as 40 when the car warms up. IIRC, the valve chatter just lasts a few seconds on start-up with 0-40. I have 5-30W right now and it's noticeably quieter than the 0-30 factory fill. But to answer your question (since I just rambled), 0-40 is thin a$$ oil, with flow properties like 0 at low temps hence...
