Default apparent oil sludge problem known at corporate level

My friend emailed me the following link:

http://e.ccialerts.com/a/hBBMrSNAG-rD9AKWnb3AGVk90RJ/andl34

The report reads as follows:

Oil sludge woes plague VW
Automaker to pay for engine repairs, extend warranties
In the latest example of Volkswagen of America Inc.'s quality woes, the
automaker is warning 426,000 VW Passat and Audi A4 owners of an engine
oil sludge problem. Affected are 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
engines on 1998 to 2004 Passats and 1997 to 2004 A4s. VW won't say how
many engines have been replaced or repaired, or what it is spending to
fix the problem.

Default Re: apparent oil sludge problem known at corporate level

I wonder if the oil sludge
problem stems, in part, from people relying on the long oil change intervals.

Default It has to be....

I can't see sludge as a problem if conventional oil was changed at 3k and synthetic at 5k. 10k and higher, (with a turbo engine holding less the 4 qts) I see this as a problem and VW/Audi being cheap with 10k oil services.
Penny wise and dollar foolish.

Default AoA mailed new warranty info to many effected owners.

so, yes, it's very well known at the corp level.

Default Questions is: why did they design such a small oil sump for a 1.8t in the first place?

My $10K less expensive '00 VW 1.8t Beetle holds just under 5 qts! So how could they think using a smaller sump on a $30 car with a 1.8t was smart engineering?

Default I agree.. the story I got from my dealer...

was it's a combined problem of long service intervals and cars driven in humid/hot climates.
They have switched to Synthetic and the larger oil filter for all service as of this spring for 1.8Ts.
