If you could bypass Bose EQ via Vag or other method it would mainly change the frequency response of the system.
Would love to hear what it would sound like off as Bose uses the digital EQ not only to "smooth" out the reponse but also to notch out resonances in the speakers such that they can basically play louder without distorting.

But they have to because they use basic materials in their speakers and not particularly high current amplification. It would be cool if Audi put a better system into their A4 and charged a little more for it.

But this is not saying that there aren't any dynamic range modifications done in DSP by Bose. Many car audio systems use dynamic range compression techniques at low-level signals to boost them above the road-noise. This is commonly refered to as an expander, though it shrinks not expands the dynamic range(difference b/w loudest and softest part of music).
What I was refering to was the use of notch filtering. Which is a filter that only rejects a very narrow frequency band. They use these filters to "notch" out the specific resonance mode frequencies of the speaker driver.
In general I'm not extremely impressed by the overall sound quality of the Bose system. Though it doesn't sound horrible, just not worth the extra $ IMHO.
