Audi Junkie: Oil question...

I was reading the thread below about the guy who forgot to bring his Mobil 1 to the dealership for the oil change.
What is your preference and why for a 1.8T? Mobil 1 0w-40 SuperSyn or the Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (or another weight). I'm talking as an everyday oil in the midwest where it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
FYI, I've searched this numerous times and my head is spinning. I've tried reading the links you posted and my head spins faster. Plain English if you can.
Thanks!

for all climates. Audi published a list about a year ago for the approved oils for the 1.8T, reference the oil sludge problem. My list is in my car but I believe the Castrol approved is 10-30, but not sure.
Also your dealership should be using the oils from this list now. Most are using the Castrol synth.

It also explained if you use these approved oils and keep records you have a 8year/unlimited milage warranty against sludge ![Wink](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
might dig around for that letter.

In a 1.8t, the following viscs work:
0w-30
0w-40
5w-40
5w-30
10w-30
10w-40
15w-40
Now some viscs are more typical of a class of product rather than it's visc range
0w-30 Artic oil
0w-40 HP
5w-40 Classic Euro/Diesel Synthetic
5w-30 American "Energy Conserving" (thin=mpg), low quality and high wear rate)
10w-30 Same as above
10w-40 A totally antiquated range associated with bad 70s formulations that sludge up even V8 engines.
15w-40 Premium diesel-rated for commercial use.
Putting together which products are available with what you need is a lil different. Yes, there are good synth 5w-30s and good blended 10w-40s, most oils are better now.
Final choice is subjective.
Do you want to run to AutoZone for German oil everytime or have a stash of it at home?
Do you want to let Quickie Lube do it with API SM dino oil that WILL WORK at 3000mi intervals?
Do you want the best bang/buck with a syn blend like Mobil drive Clean 7500 or Valvoline DuraBlend 10w-40 with Euro specs?
Do you want to keep in-spec for warranty? Because you will have to skip a lot of new high-tech oils that work great like Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 or Pennzoil Platinum. Mobil 1 5w-40 SUV might be the best otc oil out there (along with German Syntec and M1 0w-40) but only 2/3 of these carry VW specs.
Nothing wrong with M1 0w-40 at 10k intervals. Try German Syntec though, you might want a stash.

I change my own oil every 5000ish miles (sometimes less for DE's)
I don't care whether I buy oil at autozone, etc. or online in bulk.
W/o more info I'd like to keep it "in warranty", but I could be persuaded by something of verifiably higher quality.
