I would not hesitate to use a thicker 30 weight that was in-spec, but there is only one w/ VW specs, German Syntec 0w-30, WalMart SUPERTECH 10w-30 is my pet oil, a thick 30 weight with generic Euro A3 spec and Hi-Miles additives, $2.40/q. If you want something exotic, stick with MB 229.3 or VW 503.01 oils but nothing really beats Mobil 5w-40 and German Syntec.
Let's try it this way...Best in Grade
Thin 30 weight= Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 Mobil 1 EP
Thick 30 weight= German Syntec 0w-30
Thin 40 weight= Mobil 1 0w-40
Thick 40 weight Mobil 5w-40 SUV aka Delvac-4
50 weight=Syntec 5w-50
Just try a few and see how they compare in your car. Do a UOA if you run a thin oil, I bet the wear is still nill.
If you want to try something noone else has, Get the BMW dealer 0w-40 aka Syntec Formula RS aka BP Visco 9000. These are all top-tier oils. I like WalMart's though.

http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=005119</a
