Default Audio Poll: Door speaker wire

Should I replace my door speaker wire with "monster cable" like wiring or just leave the "already in there" wire as it is?

Putting in Boston Pro Series 5.5's for those who are interested.

Thanks

you'll get better sound quality if you upgrade speaker wire. what do our Audi's have anyways, 18 guage? I ran 12 to all my speakers in my other car. even the tweeters

Default Installation question for you...

...the BA Pro 5.5's are component speakers. Are you going to attemp to mount the tweeter in the stock tweeter location? I'm thinking of doing just that...and I'm wondering how it will work and/or how much modification will be required. Please keep us posted....with pictures, if possible!

Oh, by the way, I would probably run new speaker wire. I will when I get around to replacing my door speakers. I've used 16 gauge "Monster Standard" for the past few installs I've done with pretty good results. It's decent quality...and relativey inexpensive (50' is about 15 to 20 bucks). I think it's important to use decent quality wire...but it's not really necessary to go crazy (though use 12 gauge minimum for a high power sub). Just my $0.02...no flames please from the people who wired their speakers with 1/0!

Default Yes ..... (more)

Yes I plan on using the stock tweeter location. I am going to try and be as stealth as possible. Although this will be about a 6-month install, I will keep you guys updated with pics.

Default I have come to the conclusion that for a head unit...

my best choice is for a monitor flush mounted in the dash. I can't imagine a dash kit for the new A4...lots of wasted space. but I know this isn't for everyone.

Default Will a double-DIN unit fit? What kind of depth is available in the dash? (more)

I have to admit that I like the way the Audi radio looks in the dash. Has anyone found any head units that provide a good match to the dash and its light scheme?

the Sony's have red illumination, but I think their sound quality is garbage. plus they only have 2V pre outs. Depends on if you want a big sound quality improvment. but sony's are also only a single din. at least I haven't seen a double yet.

Default Leave the door wiring as is. The lower gauge wiring going into the door...

...is already the limiting factor (along with head unit wattage). If you change door wiring, you're only running a bigger gauge to the tweeter where it's totally useless. Go ahead and hook up an oscilloscope, a good lab mike, and run the tones. No difference. Even if you run bigger gauge wire from the head unit. What the scope doesn't even see you'll never hear. You've got to increase the amps first coming down the wire. Bigger wire is zero return. Invest in the best speakers you can afford - that's where you'll HEAR the difference.

The current wiring from the amps is 1.5 mm from the H/U to the fronts and 1.0 mm for the rear amp to rear speakers although it changes to 1.5 mm for/in the rear doors (for flex/durability purposes and carry over compatibility with the Bose). The sub's are just 1.0 mm (if you put in a larger amp, deffinitely upgrade these wires to carry the increased wattage). The front center speaker is an adequate 0.5 mm for its size and tonal limits.

Now the real fun comes with kludging in the new speakers in the first place. Good luck.
