B6 A4 reliability - better info - please sign up
With JET's support, for which I am very grateful, I've been posting once a month about the vehicle reliability research I'm conducting.
Results are updated four times a year, so any changes in repair rates quickly become apparent. And the actual numbers are reported, not just vague dots.
Response has been very good--nearly 600 A4s have been enrolled. But more participants remain needed.
Participants report repairs the month after they occur. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.
To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results free of charge.

We've updated the results for the B6 A4 to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2005: 159, worse than average, small sample size, actual repair rate probably much lower based on result for the 2004
2004: 87, about average
2003: 163, worse than average
2002: 149, worse than average
A big thank you to JET, this forum, and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and post separate results for each engine.

952 A4 owners now signed up. An excellent start, but more are needed to provide precise results for all model years, especially if and when it becomes necessary to report results separately for each engine. Updated results soon.

All are worse than average. We've been seeing much lower repair frequencies for the B7 and B8.

Updated results again next month.
We're going to start providing new stats for the odds of requiring no repairs and the odds of getting a lemon. These require larger sample sizes, so additional participants would be helpful.

Recently enhanced the related repair history survey so that it can (optionally) be used as a personal car maintenance record.
