back window blow out due to weather?
hey everybody. this may go down in stupid question category and not sure if it has been discussed before. But something really weird happened while driving last night.
own a b6 avant. Live in Canada so we are degrees Celsius. it was -18C with wind chill nearly -25 to -30. i was drivinge north of Toronto just for a nice quattro drive. I dropped off one of my friends then was enroute home, when i heard this loud bang in the back of my car like someone threw a snowball or rock at my car. pulled over and there was no one around. got out and my back window on the wagon was shattered. could tell the explosion or breakage however you call it started from where the rear wiper blade is connected to the window. The window then shattered after driving a few KM.
So the reason i addressed weather is because i am not sure what could have caused this. Would anyone have any insight on this? my reardefroster? I am now smelling a burning smell faintly in the car. i will be contacting the dealer to see if they know anything. but should anyone have any ideas please let me know what you think.

Did you have the rear defroster on?
Cold can make windshield glass more prone to shattering....as does age, and heat.
From your description, of the rear wiper blade connection, it maybe a area of pressure on the glass, which helped it to shatter...

Yeah, there is a history of B6 Avant rear hatch lid windows spontaneously shattering. ..
Was your rear window defroster ON when this happened?
I recall there was a TSB issued on this, and I think that Audi was replacing the glass with a different spec. You may get assistance from Audi, for a share of the expense of a replacement window, or not. There was a period in '03/'04 when this was happening more frequently, then it seems to have stopped.

happened to me without any explanation...
I thought I had ice on my back windshield (extreme upstate NY cold). On closer inspection, the window had shattered, being held together only by the tint.

Just make sure they get ALL the glass out of the rear door (I heard glass rattling around untill I removed to panel to take out the remaining chards).
