Basic Oil Change

Basic Oil Change
I have a 2004 A4 Avant, 55,000 miles. Dealer wants $150 for oil change, Jiffy Lube says car requires synthetic oil and wants $60 to change and the other local shop wants $40 and says bag the synthetic deal. Whats the real scoop on this and what am i better off doing? I change oil every 5K or so. Any tips on this?

Wal*Mart has good oil services, a million oils to select from but only the smaller filter.
BYO filter or use the smaller Fram 2870A(?) use the Tough Guard grey version. Full-sized filter options are many, the STP and BOSCH are good. As for oil, depends on climate, but Pennzoil Platinum 5w-30 is fine, even in summer. I would not even bother with any others except maybe MaxLife Synth or M1 0w-30. WalMart has the Rotella T Synth 5w-40, one of the best 5w-40 on the market, but too thick for my tastes.
You can leave the belly pan off top make later changes easier. The filter is accessable from above, just under the coolant tank if you take out the 2 screws and fold it bck onthe hoses. An oil extractor is nice to have too. Pulls 90% of the oil out thru dipstick tube and you either leave or chaneg the filter.

Most filter mfgs have one or two big ones, even Fram...W*M just does not stock it. Try Purolator...
any filter for any year Audi is fine, aas long as it's bigger than the lil one. Say the lil one is like a baseball, the big one is like a softball.
STP S3569, BOSCH premium 3500 are two.
