Battery removal 02 A4?

Sounds stupid right? My A4 is stored indoors for winter but I start it up every few weeks; yesterday battery was stone cold dead, at about 5VDC. I tried to remove it to take it home for a full trickle charge but was stonewalled by the way it's tucked in front of the firewall. Once you remove the full-width plastic shroud to fully access the compartment, there's a big hex-head screwdown retainer clip that keeps the battery in place. Unfortunately this clip/hex nut is directly under the fairly beefy flat-steel stabilizer arm that cross connects to the 2 shock absorber towers on each side of the car! To remove the damn battery it appears that you need to first get pretty intimate with this stabilizer arm, which seems kind of stupid, even for those clever Germans. I'm thinking there's gotta be an easier way. BTW I gave up on the removal and snaked a bigass extension cord and charger to the car. It would be nice to figure out the battery thing regardless.
