Benefit of synthetic oil, as opposed to regular oil? (specifically Mobil1 0w-40 for 1.8t).

Mobil 1 0w-40 and 5w-40 are top-grade synths. They are far better than most other brands of synth, esp 5w-30s. Those "otc" synths have 2 strikes aginst them, poor basestock and poor additive package. Chevron Supreme has a GII+ basestock, partly a synthetic itself and the Syntec Blend shows awesome analysis and is ACEA A3-rated, better than many of their fool-synths. I'd use either in a V6, no problem.

extended drain intervals,.... etc (like Audi Junkie said). And with some ester based and pure ester synths (Motul, FUCHS) it's unshearable. Also said to be better then petrol derived synths with temp, wear/friction and overall protection. Ester synths coat all the metal surfaces and will not flow off if the engine has been sitting for long periods (unlike petrol based synth oils). It leaves a thin film everywhere, so there is no metal/metal contact on cold start ups (after sitting). It's all there from Motul, read up.
Motul 8100 Ester E-Tech would be my highest recommendation. But being more $$ then M1 and harder to find, M1 will win your $$$.
