Default better in snow: Audi quattro or Jeep Cherokee? asks Southern CA

We are going to a Sierra Lodge near Sequoia that
requires tire chains. I just discovered that my
wife's 99 Jeep Cherokee has the same clearance
problem as the quattro - chains can not be used.

Which would give better traction: Jeep Cherokee
4-wheel drive (new 225/75R15 Pirelli Scorpio tires)
or 02 A4 3.0 (stock M + S) tires? Anyone with
experience with both?

Thanks
Bruce

Default

I'd imagine the cherokee - especially with new tires over stock Audi tires

Default I'd bet on the Audi...

there are several models of Pirelli Scorpions, but none of them are snow tires so no better than the A4's stock M + S. The jeep has better ground clearance but that's it for advantages - quattro is MUCH better than the jeeps part-time 4wd.

Audi for street driving (ice cornering), Cherokee for getting through snow

Deep snow, go with the cherokee. In most urban areas the A4 with all-season tires is perfectly suitable. I live in Minnesota and have much experience with driving in snow and ice. Owned a Cherokee, Subaru, and now an A4.

Default I drive a Grand Cherokee right now. I don't know what ice cornering is :) but

in any kind of adverse conditions this thing is a monster. never had a problem climbing snowy or icy hills. Its a brute.

Default If you do not plan to do offroading, the quattro and esp in better then a 99 Jeep Cherokee

Wife had a Trailblzer before the A4 and she admitted that the Audi is better in snow and icy roads. Taking about ground clearence, it's not a problem if you stay on the road!

Default I drove a Grand Cherokee before my A4...

When I lived in Vermont I could drive through anything. It was amazing. Great for hauling gear and people through bad conditions.

But the A4 is such a better overall driving experience

Default Usually it's chains*or*4WD. Take the Cherokee, but the A4 stops shorter in dry and in snow.
