Default Bi-Xenon-Plus (or whatever you want to call them) write-up... [edit: price listed]

(Please give Fotki a few secs to upload all the pics...)

Okay so last Friday i finally got my xenon-plus headlights from PGPerformance, imported directly from Germany...

i couldn't wait to have them installed so after swapping the stock bulbs to Philips BlueVision H6W for the city lights and Osram Diadem for the blinkers (picked-up at PGP), PaulJr and i got started on the install.
(note: i wanted to put EPi city lights, but since they're so unreliable and that the housings have to be completely taken out in order to change the bulbs, i decided to play it safe and use the Philips instead)

unfortunately i don't have pics of just the headlights...

so although i wasn't sure whether these would just be a straight "plug&play", it turned out to be just that, although i would rather call it a "plug&play and jam-it-in-there" instead...
even-though the openings for the screws are located in the exact same spot for both stock and xenon-plus housings, the xenon-plus are bulkier than the stock ones, thus there is less room around them.
we spent about 15-20mins on the driver side just to get the housing in there, and on the passenger side we had to pull on the light cord just to be able to go around the housing and being able to plug the light connector in.

but once all that was done, everything worked just fine... auto-leveling feature works, city lights work, xenon low&high beams worked as well as the halogen high beams...

here in this pic, you can get an idea of how tight things are now...

now since i know some of you are going to be asking, here is what the light pattern looks like, BUT please note that the headlights still need to be properly adjusted.

xenon low beams:

xenon and halogen high beams:

flashing:

(both xenon and halogen high beams are turned on when flashing)

retail price on these is CDN$2,150 which would be somewhere around US$1,600...

finally just wanted to thanks PaulJr & PGP for all the help...

oh and here one more gratitous pic...

Default nice. looks great!

what do you mean about EPI bulbs being unreliable and difficult to put in?

Also, what's your take on the Phillips Blue Vision bulbs? Are they a pretty good match to the white in the Xenons?

Default how are these "bi-xenons"?

i thought that meant that both low and high beams were xenons.

Default well...

when i had my A4 e-codes i went through 2 sets of them, they only lasted for about 2-3 months each... i did talk to Chris@EPi and he did acknowledge the reliability issue, was actually really disapointed about the lack of it...
EPi replaced them free of charge everytime though but the thing with the bi-xenon is that you have to take the housing out in order to change the halogen, xenon or citylight bulbs b/c of the way the things are placed...

Default i agree.

On a 3 series you can see a little contact lense looking thing move off the xenon projector and give it a longer/higher range

Default defintion of bi-xenon/xenon-plus...

you may have noticed i refered to then as xenon-plus and not bi-xenons b/c you're right they don't have 2 xenon bulbs..

there is a mechanism in the xenon assembly that control the amount of light coming out from the xenon bulb, when in low beams the amount of light is similar to that of regular xenons, but when high beams are turned on, more light is allow to come through from the xenon bulbs, the halogen high beam are also turned on...

this is why i thing it's more accurate to refer to them as xenon-plus instead of bi-xenon...

Default it sort of it...(more)

The low beams are normal xenon bulbs. The high beams open a shutter that allows out more light from the normal xenon bulb. I am not sure if the xenon (while on high beam) is more intense, but it allows more light to come out. There is still a halogen bulb used for high beams as well.

i think all that is right?
