Buying a 2004 A4 which engine do I choose?

Years ago I had a 1994 S4, then I got married and had kids. So the Audi was replaced by a SUV. Now my kids are older, and I want another Audi. I am looking at a 2004 A4 with Ultra Sport pkg (can't afford S4). For fun-to-drive and performance which is better, the 1.8T or the 3.0? Which transmission should I get? I read the 1.8T is slower, but I thought there may be more after market performance parts for this engine, is this true? I just sold my SUV yesterday, so need to buy ASAP. Please help me decide, I have been out of the scene for a long time.

04 1.8t quattros are 6spd and all 3.0s are 6spd
but 1.8t clutch is weak so thats a hit or miss
and 1.8t is nearly undrivable with ac on under 2k

if u are fine with modding, then the 1.8t is much more fun and has more potential.
Out of the box the 3.0 is hands down faster and comes standard with the 6 speed (1.8t had it as an option)

Neither in stock form is all that fast. I think if had to do it again I might get a 1.8T due to the availability/ease of performance mods, but a S/C (~$4000+) on the 3.0 is still very tempting if I ever had the money lying around to do it.
3.0 in general has more creature comforts stock (power mirrors/seats, auto dimming mirrors etc.). With either car, definately get a stick.

A little drama going on this link thread though. However, the car is nice if you were going to mod it anyway.
And as far as the 3.0 goes, it's a really nice highway cruiser. It has descent power and although it doesn't have the rush of a turbo, it's fun to drive, especially if you upgrade the suspension. I have a stick but I've driven an automatic and they're not bad at all!

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/1090784.phtml</a
