Which size to go with (on a stock 17-inch wheel)?
215/50/17 or 235/45/17?
What are the negatives of running 215/50/17 (if any)?

235-50-17 is TOO big. 215-50-17 is a great size and will be better in snow than the 235, it is a tad shorter but that is fine. I don't see any downfalls to buying a 215-50-17.

downward force/area, allowing it to dig into snow better.

I'd say unless you have to regularly handle deep snow, 235 would be just fine. 215 shouldn't look stretched on a 7.5" wheel, I don't think.

215 looks fine on the 7.5" wheel. Everything is always a compromise. Personally i am running the 235-45-17 snowtires on my OEM sport wheels. Yes the 215 would cut thru the snow better, but i wasn't as concerned with that. I spend alot of time on dry pavement during the winter so i also wanted decent dry traction and still get good snow/ice traction.
Everything is a compromise. Either one will work. How about flipping a coin and going with that option. By the way Heads = 235-45-17, and tails = 215-50-17. Pull out a quarter and place your order before all the tires are outa stock!

figuring smaller sidewall would give a little better dry handling and get better ice traction from dedicated snow/ice compound and larger footprint.
