Default A/C Problems!!! Coolant Leak!! Needs Timing Belt ASAP!!

My A/C recently crapped out! I live in Houston so this is a big problem. I was on a long commute when it happened. When I went to turn on the A/C at highway speed the engine RPM dipped violently and then the econ light came on. I assumed the compressor locked up. The car runs fine besides no A/C. Upon inspecting the compressor, I noticed a black tacky substance coming out from the front of the flywheel for the compressor. Does this sounds like a crapped out compressor??
I also notices a coolant leak behind the engine block above the transmission. Is this a common place to have a coolant leak? What steps should I take to diagnose and repair?

One last question: Would a DIY timing belt change be a doable task with a Bentley manual and a day dedicated to the job? I found a great timing belt kit on ECS Tuning and really would rather pay $250 and DIY instead of $1400 at the dealership!

the coolant leak may be a rear coolant flange going out: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=189137

i havent had to do it, but apparently its a real PITA to get out, working blind. how is the coolant level in your reservoir? make sure to keep it full, use distilled water if you have to.

Thanks for the info and great link. I have been keeping the reservoir full but it usually will empty in about 3 days. I have been using regular tap water and g12 radiator fluid to fill it up. Should I change the coolant after the repair? If so, how??

you should drain the coolant and flush after the repair:
