Default I use a paper towel

I lay the dipstick business end flat on the towel, then roll it a little to the side to see where the oil left on the towel matches up with the dipstick level marks.

Default I try that... seems to always read something, yet may be low.

it's annoying.

don't worry - oil's over rated. use it 'til it's burnt black - then its easier to read

The tip should be white or gray plastic ... or just metal like my old BMW

Default I do the paper towel thing too. Remember that the oil level should be ...

checked with the oil up to operating temperature (or close to it). Otherwise the level will appear to be low, since the oil expands as it heats up. Also, don't try to measure the level right after turning the engine off. Allow several minutes for the oil to drain down to the sump. Finally, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, then check using the paper towel technique.

I'm thinking of maybe just painting the tip.
