Don't want a manual? Either you live in the city or you're a girl. : )

Default pfft, manuals only advantage over CVT is the "fun factor".

and when Im in a manual, after tooling around a coupla weeks in the city, the fun factor goes away and you want the cool factor of the CVT

I had a feeling my last post was dangling some Docjan bait.

Default Quick and dirty answers within:

* quattro: an AWD (All Wheel Drive) system, where all 4 wheels are driven. Many all wheel drive systems power primarily the front wheels (e.g. Honda CRV) or the rear wheels (e.g. MB ML, I think), and engage the other wheels as needed. While others drive all wheels at different power ratios and move the power to the appropriate wheels as needed (e.g. BMW 330xi).

* FronTrack: also known as FWD (Front Wheel Drive) where only the front two wheels are powered.

* RWD: Rear Wheel Drive (not available on an Audi?), where only the rear-wheels are driven.

* Part-Time 4x4: (not available on an Audi) a system where all four wheels can deliver power, but through locked differentials that fix the speed of the wheels, making it unsuitible for high speeds.

* Manual Transmission: a transmission using a clutch and gear level that must be shifted by the operator.

* Multitronic: a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) that uses a belt or chain (in Audis) connecting two variable dimension pulleys that provide almost infinite gear ratios, thus allowing an engine to operate in it's optimal range, rather than in a limited set of 3 through 6 ratios. Audi provides a Triptronic-like functionality that has a set of 6 pre-defined ratios.

* Automatic: a transmission that uses fluid to provide clutch-less shifting. Once called a torque converter (which is actually something different).

* Tiptronic (tm): An automatic transmission that allows easy switching of gear rations through flicking the shift lever.

As of 2003, the options in A4s were:

3.0L + CVT + FronTrack
3.0L + 6 speed Manual + quattro
3.0L + Tiptronic + quattro
1.8L + CVT + FrontTrack
1.8L + 5 speed Manual + FronTrack
1.8L + 5 speed Manual + quattro
1.8L + Tipronic + quattro

Avants are only available with quattro. Convertables are only available with CVT.

It would be nice if CVT were available with quattro. The Nissan Murano has a CVT + AWD with a 3.5L engine! It would also be nice if the Convertable (and upcoming Coupe) were available with quattro, but as of 2033, they were not.

I'd love a 3.0L + CVT + quattro A4 Convertable!
