Can you use a cell phone inside the A4?

The manual says that a phone without an external antenna will interfere with the electronics. I agree with pulling off the road to use the phone, but do I also have to turn off the ignition and get out and stand in the rain? Can't my wife use the phone while I drive?

I use my cell (Nokia 5160 w/AT&T) all the time in my '02 A4. No problem at all. You're not supposed to use the cell while filling with gas, but hey, if you gotta go, go big!

My wife's '97 MB C230 manual says that.
I think my '97 VR6 did too.
My guess is, it's some kind of C.Y.A. statement from the car manuafaturer, but I'm not sure why.

...blowing up a gas station (started in Czechoslovakia - it was a hoax). You'd think there'd be more concern about steel shoe nails causing sparks but I guess cell phones (and electricity) is still magic to a lot of the natives. Now, the liability lawyers have exclusion clauses about "explosive atmospheres" in every cell phone user guide. Gas stations even post warning signs about turning off your cell phone. Yeah, right, like we've ever lost a gas station in Los Angeles because some cell phone zombie lit the place up making a call.
