Car not moving when put into gear

Car not moving when put into gear
Hi guys,
I have a 2004 Audi a4 1.8t, and last night on the freeway my car suddenly stopped accelerating. I pulled over and saw smoke coming from under my good along with a bitter smell. I turned off my car and let it cool down, when I turned it back on I tried accelerating, then engine revs but the car does not move. I had it towed home, and today I tried looking.more closely into the problem, when I put it in D I can hear a noise like.it's trying to grip the gear. Any help is appreciated thank you. It's CVT transmission btw.
