Car thinks key is in ignition

Car thinks key is in ignition
I tried to start my car today and I noticed the ignition wouldn't let me turn the key. So I took it out, put it back in, and used a little force to turn the engine over. It briefly got stuck in the starting mode, but I twisted it back to ON, and didn't think much of it.
However, when I parked the car, took the key out, and opened the door, it was chiming like the key was in the ignition, and it wouldn't let me lock the doors with the remote. So I tried reinserting the key and taking it out again, to no avail. I looked in and saw the little white tab/tumbler thing inside the keyhole was stuck down.
Anyway, I did search the forums and tried the suggestions. After tapping on the ignition, banging on the steering column, quickly removing the key, and spraying in some WD-40 (which continues to ooze out of the ignition), the car is nevertheless convinced the key is in the ignition. On another note, the ignition turns over normally now. But I don't want to bring my car anywhere if I can't arm the alarm.
I have a dealer appointment in a few days but was wondering if anyone had any do-it-yourself ideas.
Help...
