Going for first oil change next week. Most of you seem to use Mobil syn. Dealer has Castrol 5-50 for about $6 a quart, or can bring my own Mobil. Have used regular Castrol years ago. Any of you know bout the syn? Thanks

Polyolefins (like STP oil treatment)are not ideal for turbos and when they get cooked they clog up oil lines(coke?) and/or leave the engine unprotected since the film strength is reduced in wide multi-viscosity oils. Casrol's product was the target of Mobil's lawsuit over the use of the term "synthetic" so in effect, Mobil thinks Syntec is junk. I would avoid it and would not put it in my car, even if it was free. This is my 2nd best pic for oil behind SynPower and ahead of Mobil 1. $3 a quart at Wal*Mart. Ask me why and I'll explain. Or better, search out my Rotella post from a few pages ago. In short, it's perfect for a chipped 1.8t with a long drain interval not because of marketing, but because of it's EP (extreme pressure) formulation.(explained in detail in the other post)

seem to be available in the "European Range" of 5w-40 in USA. Mobil 1 0w-40 might be ok if you live in extreme cold (constantly below zero) but one problem is the 0w oil tends to make a normally smooth valvetrain noisy *and* the new formula "SuperSyn" M1 was created after Mobil lost their Castrol lawsuit as a cost saving device.
