Catalytic failure and great gas mileage????
So I recently was visited by the coilpack fairy, and replaced all 6 ('02 3.0). About a week later #6 goes out on me again (only a week old). Lucky me, about two weeks after that I get the 16805 and 16815 codes (Efficiency below threshold, banks 1 and 2).
In the back of my head, I was waiting for this to happen after the coilpack failure, but was surprised to get both at the same time. Cleared the codes and about two days later they both came back. Has anyone else experienced both at once?
So after hours of STFA, and reading more than I ever cared to know about Catalytic Converters, I am trying to figure out all my options. Strangest part is that everyone else said they got horrible gas mileage when the CEL was on with this code, I am averaging around 29mpg (highway, in a 3.0 mind you) and managed 420 miles out of my last tank. This is the most I have ever got out of a tank of gas.
So here's what I'm trying to figure out now. Are there any companies that make an aftermarket Cat for the 3.0? And for those that have had a failure outside of warranty, did you replace with OEM or find another route. I am looking at possibly doing a complete manifold back custom exhaust system, but am trying to price every option out as I now need a root canal as well (freakin' abscess nerve). What has worked well for others and what would you avoid? I'm at 132,000 so my car is well out of the 80k emission warranty.
What does everyone reccomend? TIA for all your help/ideas for the best way to proceed.

Welcome to the World of Audi V6 engines....
Where everythings twice the expense to fix! ;o)
Yes, there are aftermarket cats available...
Who's going to do the custom exhaust work?
Probably the simplest & least expensive route, is to have someone cut out your old cats, and weld in 2 new ones.
Anytime you approach any exhaust shop, and ask for "custom" work, the extrance fee for such work usually doubles...
Have you seen this website-<ul><li><a href="http://www.discountconverter.com">http://www.discountconverter.com</a</li></ul>
