Check engine light...

Besides the fuel cap being loose what is the usual reason(s) the check engine light comes on (and stays on)? In addition when it first came on all the gear position lights flashed for several seconds in the center dash display. I have the 1.8 with CVT.

When mine came on, they replaced the Fuel Evap. STFA under CEL and MIL.

There is no 'usual' reason, there are a lot of different engine codes...

get to an autozone or find someone who has a VAG-COM and have the car read.
