Check Engine light (Cat conv.)

Recently had my check engine light appear. Car drove normal but took it to the dealership to get it checked. Dealership said it was a sporadic misfire of the Cat. They cleared the code and said if it reappeared I must correct the problem. I was quoted $1,256. Any thoughts or suggestions? Also should I be expecting that check engine light to be back soon...That's what I'm anticipating.

Not sure if the code is the same, but my car gets periodic codes (P0401 I think...will look up this weekend) which clear after a few drives. One of the corrections is a new cat (I have a 1.8t)It has been doing this for the 9 months I have owned the car. I periodically pull codes with my VAGCOM to verify nothing has changed, but I wouldn't touch it as long as it continues to clear and the engine otherwise runs normally with no misfires.
