Main problem with A4s will be the wet braking problem, unless it has been fixed in the '02s.

Any input to sway him to Audi?

Default Motor Trend did a comparison between the two...

It was a television program I saw about two weeks ago which ran this exact test. They took two four-wheel drive equipped cars (one was a 3.0 A4 and the other an S60) up to the snowy areas of New Hampshire, and tossed them around as hard as they could.

Their conclusion was that the S60, while a very nice on-road vehicle, was not a very capable vehicle in the snow.

On-road, I would consider the S60 an equal. But in weather with potential ice or snow (such as in New England winter) I think we A4-owners are the best-equipped. The torsen found in the Quattro is one of the more-evolved systems on the market today, superior to most computer-controlled afterthoughts installed on M-B's and Volvo's, or the viscous-couplings found in other rally-inspired cars. For me, this was enough of an argument to get the A4.

Default I am shopping same. The V60 is a more expensive car and has baaad torque steer.

But it is a pretty nice ride.

Default I had the S60 and paid 2000 to get rid of the thing. Go with the A4 or A6.....

The S60 seems good but after the initial 250 miles you realize that the car is nothing great. It begins to creek, you get bump steer and the suspension is not calibrated very good.

Default Further....

My wife has a XC and even she comments about how the car has gotten a lot louder and less road worthey after 12,000 miles.
The sunroof leaks, transmission sucks, windows don't seal as good as they used to, and the electronics suck.
