Coil pack failures

I think there is more then one problem with these coil packs. Most people talk about the electronics inside the coil's head getting too hot and then failing. But it seems in my case when my coil let go (on start up)the problem was not the electronic part that failed. Upon removal at the dealers I was told it was the insulator part of the coil inside the long metal part that goes down to the spark plug that had broken thus creating a ground if I undrstand this correctly an actual mechanical failure not electronic. Is this possible and are there other reported cases like mine?
