Volkswagen, Audi Recall 530,000 Vehicles

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Volkswagen of America Inc. and Audi of America Inc. are recalling about 530,000 vehicles because of faulty ignition coils.
The automakers said Tuesday that the ignition coils "have been experiencing a higher-than-normal failure rate."
The ignition coils provide electricity to the engine's spark plugs during operation. When the coils fail, the check engine light/malfunction indicator lamp blinks, vehicle performance can become rough, and the engine can lose some power.
The automakers plan to replace the coils on all 2001 and 2002 model year cars equipped with certain engines.
Affected cars are equipped with 1.8 liter engines, including the Audi TT and A4 and the Volkswagen Golf/GTI, Jetta, New Beetle and Passat.
The recall also includes vehicles equipped with the Passat W8 engine, and all Volkswagens equipped with the 2.8 liter VR6 and the Audi 3.0 liter V6 engine.
Early production 2003 models also are affected.
"We know that some ignition coils installed in our cars are not up to our high quality standards," Gerd Klauss, president and chief executive of Volkswagen of America said in a statement. "The right thing to do is to fix every single car with these coils by replacing them whether they are broken yet or not."
Customers will be notified about the coil replacements by mail.
Audi and Volkswagen of America parent company Volkswagen said in a statement from its headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, that it was recalling roughly 850,000 vehicles worldwide because of the problem. It declined to comment on the cost of the recalls.

Guy in my office has a 2002 Jetta GLI with the VR6. His response upon reading that VW will provide loner vehicles-"Dodge Neon here I come!"
He said that VW's also has a window guard that is flimsy and the window can actually fall into the door when the plastic piece breaks. Anyone know if this has happened on any Audi's? He said VW replaces it with a metal guard.

I heard that Audi is trying to extend the warranty to 10 years. I hope they can include free maintance. (I know it's too much...)..
By the way, I already replace that coil, but do I need to replace it again?
