at the head. Then yes heat can kill the IGBT quickly. Most of these coils use an IGBT by a manufacturer that is known to be sensitive to temperature. The IGBT can latch-up at higher temps and self destruct.
Bosch is working on production/replacement coils for Audi/VW and are most likely going though an automotive qualification program at this time. The Bosch coils will be the ones to use in the future.

I don't use the VW tool to remove them, I just unclip them and pull straight up with my fingers. Why would you need a screwdriver, they are just friction fit in there?
