Default Compass on rearview mirror garbled after windshield replacement

Had the windshield on my '05 Avant 3.0 replaced earlier today by a local auto glass shop. My car has the auto-dimming rearview mirror w/ compass. When I got the car back, the compass was screwed up (see pic). It appears scrambled, although if you look closely, you'll notice it's just that all of the LED segments are lit at once.

I followed the recalibration process in the manual, but that didn't help. However it partly works. If I hold the button down for ~3 seconds, the mirror turns off. If I continue to hold it longer, the display shows my selected magnetic zone correctly (13). But if I hold it past 9 seconds as the manual instructs, the "C" never appears as it is supposed to; it just continues to show the garbled display.

Since the mirror has power and appears to be at least half working, I'm hoping someone has an idea of what might be wrong? Could it just be a bad connection? I asked the glass guy if he maybe plugged it in backwards but he told me it will only attach one way.

Dumb question, but if I want to try disconnecting and reconnecting the mirror wires myself, should I disconnect the battery first? IIRC this can cause other problems (radio etc).

The compass has worked perfectly fine for the past 4 years up until today...

Default Didn't work unfortunately, I already tried that (noted in original post)

Also note that this procedure appears to be for the older version of the compass mirror. I have the newer version with the "floating" compass display and the actual button (not the old pinhole adjustment). Either way, I can't get the "C" to appear.

I'll re-ask my dumb question-- is it recommended to disconnect the battery before unplugging the mirror wiring harness? Just being paranoid...

Default Tried disconnect/reconnect wiring harness, of no use... no pins are bent, wtf is wrong...

Haven't actually tried removing the mirror from the ball joint yet.

Default Unless the mirror works with the key in the off position (like when you open the door)

it's probably just powered when the key is on. Therefore, you wouldn't need to disconnect the battery before unplugging the connector. Good question though, that many folks don't consider. Hot socketing a connector is not a good practice.

Had the dealer look at it, unfortunately they say a replacement mirror is needed to fix
