Default Confirmed: Better ignition quality using Ignition Solutions modified Hitachi coil packs.

I had been considering trying the Ignition Solutions Plasma Booster coils for a long time, but the cost of a set of 4 new, was more than I was willing to pay. Recently, I found a set available from a private party and the asking price was less than half the new cost, so I jumped on the deal. The Ignition Solutions coil pack is a modified Hitachi B5 part, (PN 06B 905 115 E.) The coil is changed, adding an epoxy potted raised round housing for the different electronics used.
The claimed benefit provided by the IS coils is that the effective spark energy in increased 4 times on the secondary high voltage output to the spark, by generating a multiple spark discharge, occurring over the time interval of the original spark discharge. Instead of just one spark event, with the electron flow from the center electrode to the ground, each successive spark event in the IS output is the reverse of the prior spark. That is, the 2nd, 4th, 6th, etc sparks of the ignition event, the electrons flow from the ground to the center electrode, opposite from the direction normally. The result is a series of sparks in rapid succession, with a decreasing energy level, but taken together, the ignition energy provided is much greater than the original coil provides.
The immediate effect on the engine is that the ignition of the fuel/air mixture is more consistent, cylender to cylender, and from each power stroke to each successive power stroke on each individual cylender. There is only a small increase in hp, but the smoothness of the engine overall is noticeably better, and the engine is more responsive to the drivers right foot. On the "N" coils, during first start up from cold, the engine would be a little rough from incomplete ignition of the cold, locally lean fuel/air charge during the first few seconds of running. Now, with the IS coils, there is no noticeable imperfect ignition events during the first ~20 seconds from start up, and is completely smooth, without the slight roughness existing with the OEM coils. This is evidence that the IS coils are able to ignite a fuel/air mixture that is leaner than optimum for best ignitability, thus the smooth running at start up compared to the OEM coil.
Another major benefit with the multiple spark discharge and increased ignition energy, is resistance to spark blow-out that often occurs at high boost, especially with tuned ECUs.
I cannot confirm by logging right now, but I would expect that the amount of ignition timing correction for knock control will be lower with these coils also.
It will be interesting to log the amount of timing retard for knock control, with both the IS coils and the F5DPOR Bosch plugs, compared to OEM coils and plugs.
Logged comparisons can be provided later depending on who is interested in that kind of data.

Default For sure!, It would be interesting to compare logs of the stock "E" vs the IS version also.

Although seperate from being more reliable, I believe the ignition charactaristic of the stock E coils wouid be similar to the newer OEM coilpack versions.

Default of the 5 that failed on me, i know the latter coilpacks were L & M

i should have kept track of all the different version my car had.

it was really frustrating everytime 1 failed since i always wasted half a day waiting for my car to get towed to the dealership.

I just bought a single Hitachi coil pack for an Isuzu. It was $114. Yikes!
