I am not completetly sure about the whole story, but they are also part of the VW group. I think many of their cars use VW engines, and are built on the same base as VW. They are somewhat cheaper than VW. Skoda is like a low end VW, but they have been improving their quality in the past years.
I think Skoda is sold all over Europe and is probably more popular in Central and Eastern Europe.
