CP failures.... anyone have symptoms prior to failure?

i noticed that a few days prior to my CP blowing, the engine seemed to mis-fire once in a while, but it would recover. usually, this happened in the first 5-10 minutes after start up. has this happened to anyone else?

Car did not go to fast idle as it normally would from cold start
Coil Pack failed within 100yds both times.
Car had not been used for 1 week prior to first failure (vacation) temps about freezing.
Car was COLD the second time, temps just below freezing.

reduced mileage by around 2 or 3 mpg, when coming to a stop, the ecu would overcompensate

at anything other than the gentlest of stops, this happened more and more untill it would do this at every stop and on the morning of failure, it did it at one stop particularly harshly, infact, I remember wondering if that one was a prelude to failure, well, that evening it happened ;o).

Can literally feel the degradation get worse as cold weather sets in... same thing happened last time, just wasnt sure, the second failure confirmed the speculation.
