CV Boot Question
My CV Boot on right front is torn. I am getting conflicting information from dealers and independent shops. I am being told that I need to replace the entire axel while another shop states I just need to replace the boot. They state the axel hardly ever get's replaced? What is true?
The cost ranges from $250 for install on new boot vs $600 for a new axel.
help... thanks

The issue is whether there's contamination to the grease inside the boot
Usually if it's torn, it's a good idea to just replace the whole axle (which can sometimes be cheaper than just replacing the CV joint). You don't have to buy a brand new one, however. You can get a quality rebuilt one, usually at a substantial discount. Check out the link I've posted, & give these guys a call. When I had a CV issue on my B5, they were priced very well. Don't know about the B6 though. Basically, it culminates into just doing the job once vs. having to do it again if the grease is contaminated or any sand or rocks get into the boot, & subsequently the CV joint itself.

http://raxles.com/</a

Addendum:
forgot to say this: you will have to remove the CV joint/axle to replace the boot anyway, unless you do the split boot thing (I wouldn't recommend it, but to each his own). So, it's not critical to replace the whole axle unless it clicks like crazy when turning, but it's not a bad idea either.
