Dealer Comment about Oil Service - Anyone heard of this?

Service Manager said oil in my 2002 A4 is synthetic, but when they change it they put in regular oil, unless I want to pay extra. WTF? I find it hard to believe regular oil in a 1.8T can go 10K miles. What gives?

Yes, I would either bring my own synth for scheduled maint, or having it changed every 3-4K with regular oil ( on my own nickle ).

I took my car to the Service dept for a scheduled service vist(Saturday) to have my keys coded to open the windows and lock doors at 15mph. In about an hour the Service Clerk came back and stated they could only do this during the week because they had to call some other dept for the codes. This pissed me off what a waste of time on a saturday morining. Dealer should have checked into this beforehand, I scheduled the apointment a full two weeks ahead. I decided not to become an Irate customer and ask him if I could have my oil changed since I was nearing 3000 miles. Stated I had to wait unitl 10,000 or pay.. When I asked if they would put synthetic oil he metioned the additional $60.00.. I could but 2-3 cases of oil for 60.00 bucks.. What a rip off.

I do that with my current mechanic, and they're cool about it...but it's not the Audi dealership...I'm waiting for that car to come in.

( built into the price of the car ). If you were concerned that Audi use synthetic, it's not unreasonable that you could have asked. It's normal that if you want an extra cost item, that you pay for it. You are free to bring the oil in yourself. If the dealership wishes to add a surcharge for synthetic that they supply, then keep in mind that they must source it and stock it. If you use that convenience, then you pay for it.
As for them not having the codes, if they knew which codes they were going to have to use, they really really should have had them on hand.

On 2nd thought your right about the oil. I'm not going to worry about what kind of Dino is used in the car or period between changes. I will follow the FREE shcedule Audi has outlined. I'm just not going to keep the car past 4 years, let the next guy worry about engine problems and repair.. To fix this car when the warrenty expires will be costly. Coming from a lexus GS300 I expect certain things when I walk into a repair shop. The last thing I want to hear is something can't be done.

... If the car comes from Audi with a more expensive synth oil than Audi should continue to use a high quality synth oil during warranty period. If you set the bar high on a performance car then continue to back up your product with the same (or better) quality. It's just good business.

It seems Audi changed their minds.....I sure wish someone from the factory would confirm here exactly what is in the engine!
I definitely want dino oil my engine to seat the rings properly and this is just from past experience. Then I will change over to Mobil 1.
