Default Dealer uses Pennzoil synthetic...any opinions?

15-40 I was told, but the guy wasn't sure.

Should I try to find something on my own or just use the dealer-provided sauce?

Thanks.

Default One of the better fluids, although non-ACEA. Probally 5w-30, a 'lil light, imo.

Personally, I'd grab my own oil and bring it in. The dealers and mechanics who buy in bulk pay almost as much anyway, no real incentive to use theirs. If you use the dealer Penzoil, change it about 6000 miles. Their lot might be old SJ-spec oil too. Ask if they have the made-for-VW Syntec 5w-40, a somewhat better choice. With the newer super-oils available...GC, M1 0w-40, BMW HP, Saab Synth, even Rotella T Syn 5w-40...Pennzoil ranks more in the Kendall and SynPower class...definately above most others though, I couldn't justify NOT bringing my own sauce. If the dealer has a 40 weight synth or ACEA A3 30 weight use it...but I doubt they do. If you are looking for something cheap and good, esters and ACEA A5 cert, check out the new formula Syntecs that are replacing Mobil 1 at walmart, $3.75 Syntec 5w-30 is guaranteed thicker than M1 5w-30. Maybe the best OTC oil now, except M1 0w-40.

Default I would BYOO [bring your own oil] and use 5W-40 for 1.8t.

Kendall GT-1 Full Synth, Red Line, Lubro Moly, Pentosin,.. You can always order online.
If you cannot find what you need locally though, or want cheaper prices; follow Audi Junkie's advice, but use a 5W-40 if you have a 1.8t.

Default

I use German Castrol 0w-30 Fall/Winter/Spring, and Belgian Castrol 5w-40 in the Summer.

Default You must love your car, I might settle for jug 10w-40 Syntec in summer. Belgian Castrol is rare...

Pretty cool. I understand the dealer 5w-40 Syntec is US made, but meets VW specs ~other~ than long-life 505, 503.1 specs. The Belgian "BC" probally meets both. Other sources for fancy oil include BMW HP Synth 0w-30, actually Castrol Softec TXT, the Saab Synth is an Elf product, forget which though. Where do you get your "BC", btw?
