My inde guy is the best. Here is the breakdown of his costs vs. what the dealer said:
(1) Passenger side air bag sensor
Dealer: $356 Inde: $250
(2) Valve cover gasket replacement
Dealer: $331 Inde: $138
(3) Cooling system flush:
Dealer: $180 Inde: $0, automatically done with timing belt
(4) Prop shaft seal on transmission leaking slightly:
Dealer: $640 Inde: $50 part, 1-2 hours labor, about $250-300 total
(5) Cowl drain area full of debris, drain:
Dealer: $249 Inde: he just did it for free
(6) Beginning wear on timing belt:
Dealer: $1450 Inde: $1100-1200, for timing belt/serpentine/thermostat/water pump/fluid flush
I could wait until the timing belt really goes, since there is no wear on it according to my mechanic, but there is some oil getting in there and it is better to just get it all done now than wait. Needless to say, this guy is a gem. He is saving me at least $1300. Thanks all for your replies. I hope these repairs will carry me well for the next few years.

It is AutoEuropa in Newton Highlands. They reworked the estimates further when I picked up the car last night. He's doing the timing belt fix with the water pump for $650. Crazy!

Good thread. Its nice to see you have a good indy shop. :tearsofjoy:
I bought my Audi from an indy shop (has just a few euro cars out front) and its a fraction of the cost to maintain it at a place like that.
