They've known for some time about it....
They knew about it when I got it over a year ago. I've put close to 40,000 miles with it. All it does for the 3.0 is a small advance in the timing. That's why there's no big gain when compared to the 1.8T engine.
They knew about it and ruled it out as any cause to the problem I've encountered. My only guess is that something metallic got into the system and did the damage. I don't know if a part broke (defect in the part) or something introduced from the outside.

Think it would be a lubrication failure?
Where he's shining the flashlight I see a purplish tint. Might just be a trick of the camera though but if it's real it doesn't seem normal.

You have some smart Audi friends Paul. :)
cam lobe, now destroyed, but designed to push down on valve lifter to open valve...your friend knew that it had something to do with the valves. I'm sure your friend didn't even fathom the possibility of a bad cam, but the diagnosis wasn't too far off.
Where can I have Audi friends like that...hahaha.

I did for a day...
Now I have a 2005 A4 1.8T base model w/ Quattro and Tiptronic tranny. It feels like it's still sleeping or in that groggy state when first waking up. At least it will do until the repairs are done.

You'll probably have a lot less troubles than I have....
I have one of the first production runs of the B6 A4. It was built 08/2001, and I bought it off the lot 10/2001. I feel that some/most of my problems are typically due to first year bugs of a new model. Each year following should have improved manufacturing and assembly methods to improve the quality and reliability of the model line.
For the first year of ownership, it ran perfectly. A few minor adjustments for rattles and squeaks, but that was all. Most of my problems happened during the second year of ownership. It was like it was going through it's "terrible twos".
Everything seemed to settle down for the third year of ownership. The things that went wrong during the third year was the 3rd catalytic converter failure and a cracked windshield washer nossle. The guys in Service were starting to joke about not seeing me around anymore (which is a good thing).
I'll post updates to this thread, so stay tuned for more. =)
