Sony has a great background in electronics and makes reliable products, but it simply can't compete with those brands with optical background. Take a minute to see neck-to-neck compro's on equivalent models on the net.
The optical quality will come at a price, so in the end of the day, it comes down to the budget, and the need.

my personal favorite is Canon (had a Canon A50, Fuji 4900z, and (new) Canon G3, and nikon's at work). nothing wrong with the p7, though, other than if it is like other sony's it oversaturates/clips reds. check out this review site...

DPReview

the quality of the lens.
If you don't need the camera to fit in your top pocket, you can pick up a vastly superior Sony DSCS85 for only $499. It's a 4mp, but it also has a Carl Zeiss lens which lets in more info' than the standard Sony lens. It also reduces glare. It's not a 'big' camera, just average size. That's the best bang for the buck right now.
