Default Distributer Clicking Sound?

Under hard acceleration I can hear the roar of the engine but I sware I can hear what appears to be the clicking of the distributer. I never heard this on the 1.8t. Is this normal for the 3.0? Kind of ruins the roar of the engine.

Default Our cars dont have distributors.

Do you hear it under all conditions?

My car makes a nasty noise when its cold and I use moderate to hard acceleration - sounds exactly like pinging but I'm 99% sure its the exhaust.

Default Uh lol....then um...

when I open the hood you hear CLICK CLICK CLICK, and my friend called it a distributer. I guess it's like the spark plugs or something clicking. I don't hear it other wise but when I downshift I can really hear it and it just sounds really lame.

Default It's probably your lifters, and you should only hear them on startup...

...because the lifters are hydraulic and arent filled with oil yet.

Again, are you hearing this under all conditions - meaning startup, warm, and hot? If so, I'd recommend getting it looked at.

Default I'll check it out today.

When I open the hood I can hear it at idle. Also under hard accelearation. That is the only time I have noticed it. When the hood is closed I can't hear it. I'll check it out today. What do these lifters do? I'll see if I can get a recording.

Default Ok here is what I found.

Cold Start...could not here ne thing from IN the car.
Warm Start...Had the hood open and could here the clicking (I was not in the car). I opened my friends hood (Volvo s80, 1999) and heard that same clicking. He said it was the spark plugs or distributer.
Driving along at below 3000rpms...heard nothing abnormal
Downshifting to above 4000rpms...could hear the clicking noise reflecting off of the surrounding houses. My friend said I should not hear that.

Ok so what is it??????

Default Step one - don't listen to the bad information your friend is feeding you...

Spark plugs plugs dont make noise, and a '99 Volvo doesnt have a distributor. Solid state (distributorless) ignitions started showing up in cars in the early 70's, and (my guess) were probably the norm by the mid to late 80's.

It's going to be pretty much impossible to diagnose the noise like this, but its not normal so take it in to get looked at.
