Default do i have some new sewing machine mod?

Hello all,

I hope someone can help with a recent development on my avant. It's a 2003 1.8t with 88,8k miles on it.

The other day it started making a sewing machine like sound under the hood. It went away, then it came back - repeat that a couple times and you get to yesterday. The sewing machine ticking got VERY loud. Right before I pulled in the garage it threw a CEL (not flashing).

Pop the hood open again, take a look. It appears to be coming from a metallic can of some sort on the back side of the motor. I put a screw driver to it and definitely feel it ticking.

So, the million dollar question - what is this thing? I have added a couple pix below to show where this thing is. Again, it's the metallic can under the large black plastic can, not the black plastic one on the very top.

What is it? How much do they run? Time to sell a kidney or time to dig in the couch?

Thank you for all for any help!

Default Cam chain tensioner.

Does the sound vanish when you press gas pedal?
Sound & location point to chain tensioner. Not a cheap thing.

Default doing a quick search on a cam chain tensioner...

looks like a big deal should that fail and a bigger job then a simple swap of a part... time for a professional to go at it.

thank you!

I would, since as stated that valve shouldn't make that noise.

bad tensioner? not to difficult but lack of oil pressure to tensioner is a concern on the 1.8t
