I don't even use the armrest, it gets in the way of shifting. Someday I'll get a short shifter.

Default Note: Armrest can be tilted down past horizontal ...

... you probably know this, but some people don't. Audi designed it this way so the armrest wouldn't get in the way of shifting. It works fine for me.

Default I've noticed that, but then when I put the brake on, it sticks up, etc.

I do use it when I'm on longer drives and not shifting, but to and from work, it's raised up between the seats.

Default I lift it slightly before applying the handbrake ...

I know this may seem to be a pain in the butt to do, but I do it automatically without even thinking about it every time I park the car. Just like when I start my car and release the brake lever, I automatically tilt the armrest down.

Me too. After 3 years, the cogs start slipping inside...matter of time til mine's busted
