Actually, the automatic mode on regular autos or Tiptronics is pretty fuel efficient on its own (if you're not hard on the gas pedal). It's difficult for you to do better when shifting a tip manually, because you often end up shifting more at performance points rather than economical points. ![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
The most fuel efficient tranny you can get in the A4 is the CVT/Multitronic though, if you're looking for maximum fuel (and power) efficiency.

The fuel economy would definitely be down in the cvt using manual mode, even though it is 6 virtual gears, and in normal tips, at best, youll get the standard autos fuel efficiency.

Actually no.
The Motronic Engine Manegement System takes into accountt your driving habbit and will (depending on throttle position) give you max econ.
So the lighter and slower you press on the accelerator, the more fuel economy.
Just a little tid bit of info.
The ECM not only reads how far you are pushing on the accelerator, but how fast you push down on it.
Also, tiptronic in the CVT "Shifts" faster than the regular O1V/O1L auto tranny.
There is somthing like 240 - 250 transmission shift maps/ "styles" They cannot be programmed and adapt to the driver.
