The consensus on the board seems to be not to push it too hard until 1,000 miles. However, you should try to vary the RPMs during the break-in period--that is, don't drive on the highway with cruise control on...

I don't buy that.
The whole varying RPM deal was from the 60's.
Metal used in camshafts before the mid 70's were not a hardened metal and there was a heat treat cycle they had to go through otherwise with hard driving early on you risked literally grinding down the cam lobes.
Things are different today, put 4-5 miles on it and the rings are seated, obviously thats true since every reports the car gets quicker as ring break in occurs, which means they must be tight in the begginging, as parts break in the internal friction goes down and power output increases.
I give it a few miles to check it out, 30 seconds after its running the rings have started to seat, after that its time to drive the car hard.
I'd like to hear a valid reason to vary RPM and all that.
